IGCSE and A-Level Biology & Geography Trip to Meise Plantentuin
Today, our Year 11 (IGCSE) and Year 13 (A-Level) students had an amazing opportunity to delve deep into their Biology and Geography studies!
Despite the adverse weather conditions, our young scientists embarked on a journey of discovery:
Fieldwork Skills: Students participated in a theoretical-practical workshop on Biodiversity. They mastered the use of scientific equipment to study ecosystems, directly applying the requirements of their Cambridge syllabus.
Global Biomes: During a guided tour of the greenhouses, students were mesmerised by the transition from arid deserts to lush rainforests, observing fascinating plant adaptations first-hand.
The Green Ark & Seed Vault: We explored the incredible work being done in conservation. Beyond the beautiful displays, Meise holds a vital collection of seeds—a "biological backup" for the planet. Did you know that the banana varieties we eat today are facing extinction? It is uncertain if we will still be able to enjoy them by 2050!
Rare Discoveries: We were lucky enough to see a rare blue flower in bloom! We also discussed the 2022 discovery by Meise scientists of a new coffee variant from Cameroon—a species that may sadly already be extinct in the wild.
If the world were to end, what would you save? Our students learned today that saving a single seed could mean saving the future.
A huge well done to our students for their resilience and academic curiosity today!
