Ocean Acidification

Ocean acidification: it's not just a buzzword!  Our Year 9 students dove into the real-world effects of climate change on marine life today.

To understand how increased CO2 impacts the ocean, they modeled the effect of ocean acidification on marine shells using a simple lab setup:

Eggshells (representing marine shells)

Plain Water (simulating normal ocean $\text{pH}$)

Vinegar (simulating acidified ocean water)

Over the course of two days, students analyzed the shells for changes in appearance, texture, and mass. The results clearly showed the corrosive power of acid and its threat to organisms that rely on calcium carbonate for their structures.

It's a powerful visual lesson on the CO2 cycle and why ocean health matters to everyone
